The IFUNdation

Support them to build a better world

GENERAL PRESENTATION

undefined

DOEN Foundation supports initiatives from those who are not afraid of taking risks giving life to their inspiring and innovative ideas.

IFUNdation is member of DOEN.

IFUNdation finances long-term associative projects that set in its field of intervention: education and training for sick, handicapped or severely challenged children and young people.

Because education changes the world, IFUNdation supports associations and non-profit organizations in their educational projects. Indeed, access to education and training are essential steps towards sustainable employment, improving social and economic situation of tomorrow’s women and men.

Supported projects are dedicated to formal and informal education, access to sport, culture and leisure activities for all children who are excluded (academic support, construction or renovation of schools, nurseries, libraries, tutoring, early-learning workshops, social integration through sport, arts, etc.).

IFUNdation targets actions that focus on the acquisition of fundamental knowledge, on the fight against dropping out of school, and on the child’s development. This involves social support, actions towards families and their educational role.

Therefore, the purpose of the 2020 call for projects is:

FIGHTING ILLITERACY AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE UNDER 16 YEARS OF AGE

THE IFUNDATION TEAM

Philippe Donzé

With 11 years in the humanitarian and socio-educative sector, in France and abroad, I developed useful skills for IFUNdation, as project management, including budgeting, its management and monitoring, and fundraising with the writing of answers to calls of project.

Nathalie Rousseau

Professional nurse training then health executive and senior executive pedagogical coordinator in a nursing training institute since September 2018. My career is focused on commitment and others. In this project, I am more particularly in charge of structuring and methodology.

Abdénaime Ichouan

In social action for more than 8 years, the human being is at the heart of my professional commitment. More than a profession, it is a vocation. I am at the side of young people in very precarious situations in order to give them the support and help they need. Social and professional integration, training and support, coaching… these are the words that punctuate my daily life. My mission within the IFUNdation is to bring my expertise in the field to the implementation and financing of projects.

Florence Courtade

My life relies on the recognition, respect and enhancement of the intrinsic worth of each human being. With IFUNdation, I work on skills, developpement of skills and self-efficacy. In other words, how to set goals and to manage to achieve them?

THE SUBJECT

What is illiteracy? (1)

Illiteracy refers to the situation when a person has benefited from apprenticeships but who has not acquired – or has lost – mastery of reading and writing. This is usually due to too fragile apprenticeships. As a result, this person does not have the basic skills to be autonomous in simple everyday situations and is particularly exposed to the risk of social exclusion.

Often invisible, illiteracy is nevertheless a reality. 2.5 million people are in a situation of illiteracy, that to say 7% of people who have been to school in France and are aged between 18 and 65[2]. Evaluations conducted as part of the Defense and Citizenship Day (JDC) highlight that, while 81.8% of young French men and women aged 17 or over are effective readers, 9.6% have reading difficulties, of which 4.1% have great difficulty.

Two types of illiteracy can be described:

  1. The situation of a person who has never learnt how to read or write.
  2. The situation of a person who, having learned to read and write, has completely lost the practice.

According to INSEE, there are 2.5 million illiterate people in France today. In 2004, there were 3.1million, or 9% of 18-65-year-old. And contrary to some preconceived ideas, they are not just young people from disadvantaged suburbs or failing at school, neither migrants, nor the excluded or homeless. They are part of another fringe of France’s invisible population. They may be your neighbor, your colleague, the person next to you in a restaurant or simply the parent of your child’s classmate.[3]  (Collaborative translation: Florence Courtade, Abdénaime Ichouan, Nathalie Rousseau, et Philippe Donzé).
